Door still open for military compensation for defence force members

Cadets sexually abused at the Australian Defence Force Academy in the 1990s can still claim compensation through the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce (DART), according to a report.

The time limit of notification of alleged abuse prior to 11 April, 2011 expired on 31 May, 2013 but ABC’s 4 Corners (story 9/6/14) has reported that DART chairman Len Roberts-Smith said the Taskforce will still accept claims.

Tindall Gask Bentley Lawyers is helping several Australian Defence Force abuse victims with compensation claims and some have already been awarded the maximum $50,000 in reparation through the Taskforce.

The door may still open for some reparation claims through the Taskforce, and TGB is continuing to investigate all potential compensation options for ADF abuse victims even if they have missed the deadline.

The 4 Corners story again revealed the systemic culture of abuse within the Australian Defence Force.

Many great women have been lost to the ADF and in some cases left with permanent psychological scars following cases of abuse.

At TGB, we have been contacted by abuse victims, both women and men, frustrated after seeing their perpetrator escape the criminal system without conviction. However, victims are still entitled to claim compensation through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA).
