Action must be taken for defence force abuse victims

TGB managing partner Morry Bailes says reports of systemic abuse in the Australian Defence Force could lead to significant compensation claims for victims.

TGB’s Morry Bailes says reports of systemic abuse in the Australian Defence Force could lead to significant compensation claims for victims.

Mr Bailes, who is managing partner at Tindall Gask Bentley Lawyers, said the military has a long history of alleged victimisation.

“The findings from the review into defence force abuse are certainly shocking, and bring to light many of the issues that our veteran and defence force clients have been telling us about for many years,” Mr Bailes said.

“Some victims have been exposed to degrading initiations and acts of bastardry.

“We have seen cases of physical and sexual abuse as well as bullying and harassment, and action must be taken.”

The Federal Government is considering launching a Royal Commission to investigate the issue further, but Mr Bailes said money should also be set aside for compensating the victims.

“While compensation doesn’t right the wrongs of the past, it would certainly help victims gain closure and move forward with their lives.”

There are a number of compensation options available to victims, including the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Tindall Gask Bentley represents many defence force members, past and present, including Vietnam Veterans.
