Alleged Australian Defence Force member abuse takes psychological toll

TGB Military Compensation lawyer, Tim White, says alleged abuse within the Australian military is likely to take an enormous psychological toll on victims.

Mr White, a partner at Tindall Gask Bentley law firm, said her firm had assisted a number of military personnel whose experiences within the Defence Force had resulted in issues such as anxiety, stress, depression and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD).

“Psychological issues make up a large proportion of our military compensation claims,” Mr White said.

“The impact is often far from limited to the incidents of alleged abuse themselves, with the effects sometimes so significant that the victim is given a medical discharge from the Defence Force.”

Mr White said that under these circumstances victims may be entitled to compensation.

“We have handled a number of claims where Australian Defence Force staff claimed lump sum payments for permanent injury, lost wages after their discharge as well as costs for rehabilitation.

“Compensation doesn’t right the wrongs of the past but it gives those affected by these situations the opportunity to move on with their lives.”
