Navigating a Comcare Workers Compensation Claim: A step-by-step guide

work injurySuffering a workplace injury is stressful enough without the added pressure of trying to understand the workers compensation system. If you’re covered under the Comcare scheme (common in Australian Government and large national employers), here’s a clear, practical guide to help you through the claims process.

Step 1: Report the injury

Don’t delay. The first and most important step is letting your employer know that you are injured and what happened.

Most workplaces have a system to record work injuries – make sure you use it. If there is no formal process, email your manager with a detailed explanation of what occurred, when and how.

Tip: Always report the injury and how it happened in writing and keep a copy for your own records. If possible, take photos of your injury or the scene to support your claim.

Step 2: Seek medical treatment and a medical certificate

Even if the injury seems minor, it is important to see a doctor and get a formal diagnosis. A medical certificate is essential to a Comcare claim.

Let your doctor know:

  • How the injury occurred;
  • What your job involves;
  • Any duties that may have contributed to the injury;
  • If you’re unable to work or need adjustments to your role.

Tip: Be honest and specific. The more your doctor understands your job, the better they can support your recovery and a safe return to work.

Step 3: Lodge your Comcare workers compensation claim

If you need ongoing treatment and / or time off work, or for modifications to be made for you to safely do your job, then it’s time to formally lodge a Comcare claim.

Don’t burn through your own private sick leave or annual leave – if your injury if work-related, you’re entitled to claim support through Comcare.

Tip: Read the Claim form carefully and answer all questions clearly and honestly. Submit the claim form with your medical certificate.

 Step 4: While you wait…

Comcare will review your claim, often requesting medical reports or GP notes. This is to be expected and part of the process.

Tip: Keep your medical certificates ‘up to date’ and track any out-of-pocket expenses for treatment or medication – you may be reimbursed if your claim is accepted.

Let your doctor know you have lodged a claim – they might defer billing until a decision is made. This will be at the discretion of the doctor.

Step 5: The outcome

If your claim is accepted: a case manager will be assigned to assist you with your recovery and support. They will help coordinate treatment and plan a safe return to work.

If your claim is rejected: don’t panic, but don’t wait! You should seek legal advice promptly as there are strict timeframes to appeal a decision.
