Abuse complaints continue to plague the Australian Defence Force, even though the complaint notification period for the Defence Abuse Response Taskforce closed on May 31, 2013.

The Taskforce has received 1535 new abuse complaints since November 26, 2012, bringing the total to 2410.

The Taskforce will also give priority to the “ADFA 24” issue, which relates to allegations of rape in the 1990s from a number of female cadets.

Military compensation lawyer Tim White said victims of abuse in the Australian Defence Force who have lodged a complaint with the Taskforce should still seek independent legal advice.

“The Taskforce compensation process is complex and there is also some uncertainty as to how each complaint will be assessed, so it is important for victims to seek legal advice to ensure their full entitlements are met,” Mr White said.

“There are also other compensation options outside of the Taskforce that we may be able to assist with.”
