ABC Radio: Should our government sue the big tobacco companies?

Health experts are urging Australian governments to sue tobacco companies for the billions of dollars spent on treating smoking-related illnesses.

Such a move would follow the lead of nation’s like Canada, whose government has launched successful lawsuits against tobacco giants to recover healthcare costs.

It would be an expensive action for the government, researchers say, but public support for tobacco control has never been stronger.

TGB partner Mal Byrne spoke to the ABC’s Caroline Winter about whether it is possible for government to sue tobacco companies.
